TEXAS
By Aidan
I chose to do a report on Texas because I thought it would be fun to do a report on a state I didn't know a lot about, and I was right! I learned stuff I probably never would have learned if I did a report on a state besides the great Texas.

History
Alamo, oil, rangers, and cattle drives! You never know what will happen in Texas. Alamo Texas was owned by four countries that included France, Spain, Mexico, and now the U.S. Most of Texas was owned by Spain but once Mexico gained freedom from Spain Texas became a part of Mexico. Santa Anna kept settlers out of Texas to keep parts of Texas Mexican. Most Texans had enough of that so Stephen Austin put together a small army and took over San Antonio. That still wasn’t enough to defeat Santa Anna’s bigger army. So they established a mission: The Alamo. All men fighting for Texas died while fighting for their freedom. The Mexicans promised mercy but Santa Anna ordered his men to kill 400 Texan prisoners. This made Texans want to fight even harder for their freedom so General Sam Houston put together a surprise attack. During that attack Santa Anna surrendered. And that’s why we “Remember the Alamo” Rangers Stephen Austin formed the rangers in 1823 to protect settlers from American Indians. Some Mexicans called them the “Texas Devils” while the Mexican war was going on. But they didn't only fight American Indians, they also fought cattle thieves, murderers, bank robbers and more. Oil Texas didn't have a gold rush in 1901 but they did have a black gold rush. In 1901, oil was gushing out of a well in Beaumont, Texas. Texas gladly provided plenty of oil for both World Wars. Texas then became the nation’s capital in oil. Disasters Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas all in tornado alley. Texas is home to some of the worst tornadoes in the country. During one tornado 53 people were killed and it caused 400 million dollars in damage. Texas is in tornado alley so they've had some pretty bad tornadoes but none as bad as this one. A monster tornado hit Dallas, Texas plowing over buildings and causing over 500 million dollars in damage. Cattle drives When new settlers came to Texas they showed Texans how to rope, herd, and ride the cattle. When Americans came to Texas they started teaching Americans what the settlers taught to them. They could make a living by doing that because they found out they were so good at it. Economy And Recources
