Wow! The highest population growth in the U.S.A. is Nevada. It’s growing because of their jobs! In 1985, there were less than 100 people living in Las Vegas. According to the 2011 census, the population of Nevada is 2,723,322. Native Americans are fighting to keep their culture alive. The Washoe is famous for baskets and less and less people from the Washoe tribe aren’t getting taught to basket weave. People from the Washoe, Paiute and the Shoshone have tried to pass on traditions, stories and art forms to their children. |
History of Silver
Eureka! That’s what people were saying when silver was discovered on Mt. Davidson. Nevada was a stop for treasure hunters when they were on their way to California. Very few people stayed at Nevada. In 1859 believe it or not there was only 1,000 settlers in Nevada. That all changed in June 1859 when prospectors found a big vein of silver on Mt. Davidson.This was called the Comstock Load. Soon after prospectors flooded the area from California and the east coast. |
Hoover Dam
In 1936, on the Colorado River, the Hoover Dam was finally finished! The Hoover Dam took 5 years and 7 million tons of cement to make. When it was done the dam stood at 70 stories tall! Because of how tall it is, people call it the eighth wonder of the world! The Hoover Dam holds water from Lake Mead for recreation and homes for people. It also make’s water power into electricity! Other city’s depend on the Hoover Dam’s benefits. |

Climate
Wow! It sure is hot in Nevada. Did you know that Nevada is the driest state in the country? In the summer the temperate amount of decrease is 80⁰ F and Nevada gets only nine inches of rain each year. The main reason is because the clouds pour most of the water in the Sierra Nevada mountains. In the desert it is 100⁰ F in the day and it can get below freezing at night. |

Greg LeMond who was born in 1961 is a pro a cyclist LeMond won the World Championship twice. He also won the Tour de France three times. Ben Alexander was an actor in the show “Dragnet.” He played the part of Officer Frank Smith. He was born in Garfield, Nevada. Dat-so-la-lee was a basket weaver and she lived in Carson Valley. Her art was displayed in lots of museums all over. |
History
Before the settlers came a lot of Native Americans lived in Nevada. Basket makers and Anasazi were maybe the first people to ever live in Nevada. All these people left in 1250 A.D. when the first Europeans came to Nevada. In the late 1700s the Shoshone, Paiute and Washoe tribes moved in Nevada. In 1843, General John C. Fremont and Kit Carson explored a lot of Nevada for the U.S.A. John Fremont also made a lot of maps of Nevada to help people get to California and Oregon. In the 1900’s Nevada’s officials knew they needed to strengthen the state’s economy. They knew the state’s ranches, gold, silver and copper mines couldn't support the state’s economy. By the 1930’s the Great Depression left many people without jobs. In 1931, Nevada made gambling legal. |

In Nevada, the governor is Brian Sandoval. Also, in Nevada the governor can't be elected twice. The two U.S. senators are Dean Heller, a republican, and Harry Reid, a democrat. Nevada has 42 state representatives. |
Geography
It sure is high up here at the tallest point in Nevada at 13,140 feet high! This state is divided into two regions: the basin region and the range region. The Basin region goes over many states and it is shaped like a bowl. The Basin region is mostly made up of deserts and valleys. Nevada also is home to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which is on the corner of Nevada. |
