History
The first people to live in Hawaii were the Polynesians. They came between 200 and 600 A.D. Maybe they were from the Marquesas Islands because they are about 2,000 miles south of Hawaii. Then the Tahitians arrived in 1000. They are called the Hawaiian Natives. Tahitians ruled Hawaii for 600 years. In 1778, a British Captain named Captain Cook and his crew landed on Hawaii. A year later, he found the rest of the Islands and named them. Hawaii, Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Honolulu, the state capital, is in the main island, Oahu.
Pearl Harbor has been a naval base since 1916. 25 years later after it was built, on December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. They sank five battleships, 150 planes, and 2,300 American lives were lost. That is how America got into World War II. Even though the USS Arizona sunk during the attack, today, on top of it there is a memorial for all the lives that were lost.
In 2006, an earthquake in the islands cut off electricity and there was a boulder slide. The boulders went into a major highway. In an earthquake in 2011 thousands of people were forced to evacuate a part of the coast because the tsunami in Japan.
